"Someone Please Call 911-The Power and Importance Of Local News & Why You Should Care"
How local news really works and why you should embrace it, not hate it.
Studies have shown that without strong local news, there’s more corruption in government, taxes and municipal bond costs are higher. Not surprisingly, voting rates are lower when no one is covering elections. Studies have also found that for a community to reach its full potential, it must be civically healthy, engaged and inclusive. As Americans increasingly get their information online or from partisan cable TV, polarization has grown more extreme. Fake news and conspiracy theories proliferate. This is an important cause of the dysfunction we’re currently seeing across our communities.
Without local journalism people are more likely to rely on more biased sources for news information, like social media, partisan news publications, cable TV, or talk radio. How can we as a community change this? Let’s discuss!
